Money and Other Monetary Instruments

You may bring into or take out of the country, including by mail, as much money as you wish. However, if it is more than $10,000, you will need to report it to CBP. Ask the CBP officer for the Currency Reporting Form (FinCen 105). The penalties for non-compliance can be severe.

“Money” means monetary instruments and includes U.S. or foreign coins currently in circulation, currency, traveler’s checks in any form, money orders, and negotiable instruments or investment securities in bearer form.

When you are finally leaving to go "home" how much cash in dollars can you carry on board.

is it $10,000 each person or $10,000 per couple

Something about it beinga an official bank check, and it being made out to myself and I was carrying it. :blink::blink: I am sure when it was cashed outside the US they would receive notification of where it came from and who cashed it as those checks take 40 days + to "clear". I tried atleast.

Interesting that customs blew you off like that. Usually they're pretty strict.
