THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God,

Which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining,

Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier,

How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek?

To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,

"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.

Because those of us who carry guns,

Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,

And at times my talk was tough.

And sometimes I've been violent,

Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,

That wasn't mine to keep...

Though I worked a lot of overtime,

When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,

Though at times I shook with fear.

And sometimes, God, forgive me,

I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,

Among the people here.

They never wanted me around,

Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much,

But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,

Where the saints had often trod.

As the soldier waited quietly,

For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you soldier,

You've borne your burdens well.

Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,

You've done your time in Hell."

It's the Soldier, not the reporter

who has given us the freedom of the press.

It's the Soldier, not the poet,

who has given us the freedom of speech.

It's the Soldier, not the politicians

that ensures our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

It's the Soldier who salutes the flag,

who serves beneath the flag,

and whose coffin is draped by the flag.

Thanks. People seem to forget that the freedoms we enjoy were earned with the blood of soldiers.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

kind of presumptuous to think that someone who kills another human being would go to heaven though. isn't that one of the 10 commandments?!? or is it forgiven for the religious that kill during wartime?

it's too bad that many good men were put in that position when they didn't have to be.

The commandment says, "You shall not murder," not "You shall not kill." There are two different words for killing in Hebrew, "kill" and "murder." All murder is killing, but not all killing is murder. You can claim that all killing is murder if you want, but you can't support that from the Bible.

Self defense is not murder, is it? if it were a situation of kill or be killed, what would you do?

as i have no fear or heaven or hell, because they don't exist ... i would kill someone if my life, my children's life, my family etc was in danger!

this discussion was started after the poem that was posted ... alluding to the fact that 'god' would forgive and accept a person into heaven after killing another human. true, according to most faiths, you can ask for forgiveness, etc ... but what if a soldier kills and hasn't had a chance to ask for forgiveness before he gets blown away ... what then? does he take the elevator down??

If God really exists and if It is really all knowing... then why does the soldier need to ask? Won't It already know?

I get a little upset because my husband works as a civilian for the military. He still gets deployed just like everyone else to the same warzones...but he's not deemed a 'soldier' and as such there is hardly any support for us. There are no special groups, no special desk to help, we're not allowed to use the facilities on bases etc etc etc.

It's not just soldiers that help to guard the United States, it's civilians too. I wish people would pay a little more attention to them as they place themselves in harms way with much less of the training that soldiers get to deal with warzone situations.

for argument's sake ... if memory serves me right, one must ask for forgiveness. looks like he's s.o.l.!

The Nazi children deserved it? How would a soldier know? Did the Nazi children have "Nazi" tatooed on their foreheads or something? What would be the youngest Nazi child that deserved to be killed?
