Hi everyone! I'm looking to travel back to England for the first time since I moved to the states on a K1 visa, and I'm not too sure what I need to permit travel!

I have:

  • Permanent Resident Card - expires August 2021
  • UK Passport - expires 2028

My questions are:

  • Can I travel on my UK passport, or do I need to get a US one?
  • Do I need to get a tourist visa from the UK
  • Can I use my greencard to travel, or do I need a permit?
  • 04/11/2017 - I-129F Received - NOA1
  • 11/14/2017 - NOID
  • 12/05/2017 - Response to NOID received
  • 12/19/2017 - NOA2
  • 01/23/2018 - NVC received and given number
  • 02/01/2018 - Left NVC
  • 02/08/2018 - Consulate received
  • 02/12/2018 - Medical
  • 02/23/2018 - Interview - G22A: new passport requested due to name error
  • 06/03/2018 - New passport sent back to US Embassy
  • 14/03/2018 - Visa in hand
  • 15/03/2018 - POE (LAX, CA)

You're UK citizen, so feel free to travel to UK( you're not US citizen right now, so getting a US passport is a NO. You can apply for citizenship with N400 when you're eligible).

Thanks for the quick reply, I was pretty sure that's all I needed but last think I want is to fly 12 hours and get turned away! I appreciate you!

Huh?  You are not a US citizen, and as such, you are not eligible for a US passport.  You are a UK citizen and will continue to use your UK passport.

The green card is only for readmission to the US.

Even if you do apply for US citizenship years down the line, you will still remain a UK citizen also (unless you really want to go through the expensive and tedious process of denouncing British citizenship).

As a side note, claiming to be a US citizen when you are not is a serious crime. I hope you haven’t erroneously claimed to be a US citizen on a job application or voter registration? It seems you are confused as to what citizenship actually means. It has nothing to do with where you live.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!
