N400 Tax question

Applying under 5 year rule.

I have tax transcripts for tax period ending year 2014 & tax period ending 2015.

2016 I didn’t work as income 0 Since I am not required to file I didn't file tax return.

2017 & 2018  I have tax returns and W2s.

2019  I have W2 and I will be filing tax return next week before i go for my interview in Feb.

Is it ok when i go for my interview i will just write a letter to them explaining why i didn't file tax return for 2016 as i didn't have income OR should i file tax return for 2016 and 2019 together next week even though no income for 2016 year ? confused. Interview scheduled for next month.

Yes, that is. Just let the IO know why you not filed tax in 2016 .

You can always file taxes, even if you make zero income. You can always go back and back-file that year, and then a transcript will be available. Always file, you can get refunds based on school and other qualifying things that happened the year you didn't earn any money. I have seen people get thousands in refunds even without earning a penny that year. Well, technically it was tax credits, but they generated the refund.

Update

Did not file tax returns for 2016 as unemployed for that year. Brought a written statement stating the same. Filed tax returns for 2019. I had the interview on Feb 7th and got approved. i let the officer know that i have not filed in 2016 and gave explanations he said not to worry and didnot ask me for any statement or tax papers for the last 5 years even though i had the documents with me.

Congrats that you got approved. Was 5 year rule under divorce? What questions did they ask at the interview?

Thank you. No. I filed under 5 year rule husband deceased. Came on CR1.
The only documents officer asked me was the Green card, ID card and the death certificate.About husband he asked me his name and when did he pass away. Most of the questions were from n400 form.
