Burns Night is the celebration of Robert Burns’ life and poetry, and it takes place every year on 25 January. The tradition started shortly after Burns’ death, when his friends made a pact to celebrate his life every year on 21 July – the date of his death – but over the years it became tradition to celebrate Burns Night on what would have been his birthday.

...

Robert (aka Rabbie) Burns was born 25 January 1759 and died in Dumfries age 37. He is considered to be the national poet of Scotland. He’s seen as a pioneer of the Romantic movement, and after his death, he became a lasting Scottish cultural icon.

We will NOT be eating haggis here tonight, but I am making neeps and tatties as part of a big cottage pie and some cranachan for dessert. And of course there will be whisky. :P Taking a ten minute break from peeling root vegetables.

Six of us tonight here -- Al and me, my sister and her boyfriend (they are not breaking up after all), the lawyer friend and Al's sister who is en route right now from LAX -- flight just landed, she's in town for a week.

Boiler, BOTH of the sisters in the same room. :D  (Pray for us.)

You can put this in your program for your ex:

To a Louse

Ha! whaur ye gaun, ye crowlin ferlie?
Your impudence protects you sairly;
I canna say but ye strunt rarely,
Owre gauze and lace;
Tho', faith! I fear ye dine but sparely
On sic a place.

Ye ugly, creepin, blastit wonner,
Detested, shunn'd by saunt an' sinner,
How daur ye set your fit upon her -
Sae fine a lady?
Gae somewhere else and seek your dinner
On some poor body.

  I would recommend this one:

    Scots Wha Hae

Scots, wha hae wi Wallace bled,
Scots, wham Bruce has aften led,
Welcome tae yer gory bed,
Or tae victorie.

Now's the day, an now's the hour:
See the front o battle lour,
See approach proud Edward's power –
Chains and Slaverie.
