we went to the local SSN office today.   K-1 POE, Married 2 days after, went SSN 7 days after.

They told us need marriage certificate and they can issue us a SSN - authorized to work SSN.

EAD not related to SSN card or number it seemed.

This is wrong info right? I think you should be able to get a SSN just based on being a K-1 visa holder with valid I-94 that doesn't expire within 14 days.

Unless you are trying to get the card in the wife's  married name in which case they need marriage certificate as proof of name change.

Without the certified copy, they issued us a letter saying no valid authorization to live and work, unable to issue ssn.  But this is gd enough for my company to issue medical insurance as new enrollment for spouse.

just reporting what we went thru.  Will revisit next week once we get the certified marriage copy fr city.  Keep u guys posted

Yeah, I think that's wrong. The K-1 visa is listed on their internal policy manual as "authorization to work" for purposes of issuing a SSN. Some posters here have had to print out that section of the manual and argue that to them and/or demand a supervisor who knows what they are doing.

I don't know why thy would think that getting married converts your K-1 from unauthorized to work to "authorized to work."  That makes no sense.

Beware that some posters here have encountered SSA staff who say "Oh we can't issue a SSN to a K-1 visa holder now that you are married, you should have come in before the wedding."  That's also wrong. You should be prepared to argue this stuff and escalate because some staff are clueless. Good luck.
