Immigrants who obtain legal permanent resident status in the United States and those who, later, become naturalized U.S. citizens, often long for their close relatives — both abroad and inside the country — to follow their successful immigration journey.

There are several ways to help an eligible family member to immigrate to the U.S., but almost always this complex process begins with the submission of an essential form to establish the relationship between the applicant and the beneficiary.

It’s called Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, and it’s the first step in sponsoring a relative to come to the U.S. Only after the U.S. government approves this petition, can the family member apply to become a permanent resident, that is, a green card holder.

Well, a couple days faster as there is no delivery time or lockbox involvement needed. The rest of the wait would presumably be the same or close to it (hopefully with fewer cases getting lost/damaged/whatever along the way as it changes hands).

It would be good though if the rest of the process continues to get automated. There is way too much paper involved.

Agreed. NVC has been moving this way with many countries already (both in terms of submitting documents (for immigrant visas, nothing needed for a K-1) and in transferring the file to the consulate). I doubt they will be fully electronic as some original documents are needed at the actual interview, and I don't expect them to allow people to upload documents for a DS-160 anytime soon (imagine all the people uploading documents for tourist visas hoping the CO looks at them...).

But this is still a big improvement IMO.
