Quick check, on the form under citizenship it has 

US Citizen

Legal alien allowed to work

Legal alien not allowed to work

And other

Yes. People have many issues at Social Security because workers don't know what to do with K1s and tell them all sorts of wrong info. You positively are allowed a SSN. Ask for a supervisor if they say differently.  Apply in the name you entered under (maiden). If your passport scan at entry ran your first and middle names together in the I-94 like MarySue instead of Mary Sue, they may have to manually verify you with USCIS. It happens to lots with British passport holders. Manual verify delays issuing card.
