Is getting the 551 stamp looked down upon if you're approved on the spot and have travel arrangements close to interview date? Its not urgent travel (not an emergency) rather a birthday of a family member in Canada that I want my wife to make.

thoughts?

You can ask. Most IOs nowadays will make the statement that you are recommended for approval and not that you are approved at the interview.

We were verbally approved and wanted to travel later that week to a graduation. At the conclusion of our interview, our attorney asked if we could get the I-551 stamp for that purpose. The IO said that they were no longer allowed to give them out after approvals, and that we just had to wait for the GC in the mail. All that being said, you may have better luck with a different IO/FO. Good luck. It doesn't hurt to ask.
