I wouldn't want to work for 40K again, either. And I sure don't. Though I was in that range a few short years ago. Which is to say that there's lots of growth potential salary-wise in this business. When I think about what I started at in the industry and where I am today, I'd say that there was quite significant growth. No reason to complain, really.

Sure, but if the realistic maximum is little more than the realistic maximum I could make in the field I'm already in, it's not really worth it.

I don't really have any passions that I could turn into a career, so there's nothing out there that I'd do for less money because I so dearly love it. Going to work for me is all about money. I suppose if I wanted to be a millionaire I'd get into investment banking or something, but I want to have a life too.

Same here. I haven't been in that range in close to a decade and if I had to go back today, I'd have to undergo a major lifestyle change. First thing I'd have to do is sell my house and be a renter again - no way I can afford my mortgage on weak money.

I believe grocery clerks top out even higher than that. I can't imagine too many high skilled jobs would pay that low.

My local grocery pays the deli meats guy 20 bucks an hour with lots of overtime. So yeah that's over 40k easy.

On the other hand, my employer has Indian L1s who work for an outsourcing vendor - they get mid 30s but are happy to make that much because it translates to quite a bit in Indian rupees and they live in shared apartments and eat rice/daal every day so they spend almost nothing.

Yes. There is an apt complex that you can get to by bus from the office, the complex is almost entirely Indians from that vendor working for various corporations in this area. Bus fare is 2.50 so they have no transportation costs either. None of them that I know have licenses much less cars.

Wow. Longterm though - they must hope to climb up the economic ladder in terms of pay.

Most of these guys go back to India. They get paid so little here but they spend so very little too - result is they save a lot. If these guys can please the boss long enough to stick around a year or two, they save enough to go back home and do something no one in their family has done before... buy a home. They're moving up in India, very few of them actually want to stay here. The IT job market in India is much more robust anyway and on IT wages they will live a much better life there than they will here. And besides, green cards are difficult to get these days with the market flooded with L1s and H1s who don't ask for sponsorship.

Steven and AJ, you guys gotta leave the NYC and Cali bubble for a second and get a dose of US reality in terms of pay ranges. 20/hour for a deli meat clerk? No way. Not in the heartland.

In most places in the US, there are tons of jobs that pay less than $10.00/hour. And I mean tons.

agreed.

$20 an hour for something might be low in one place and high in another. the best bet is to find out what the median income is for the city/county, then you'll have an idea what's low or not.

Oh I know NJ salaries aren't exactly "typical" of the rest of the nation. What I would like, if only I could figure out how to do it, is pull in my NJ salary and pay a bumblefukc USA (Tennessee?) cost of living.

Yeah, I miss the days of TN cost of living - Tampa ain't that bad either but it is somewhat more expensive than Nashville. Thing is, though, that they don't pay NJ or NY salaries in TN (or in this here place).
