Philippine Middle name confusion

 Share

6 posts in this topic

Recently renewed my philippine passport to my married name and they made me follow 'filipino way' (my father's surname as my middle name)

now, i will receive GC in 'american way' since we applied AOS this way... my old middle name (mother's) remains my middle name)

Example:

Maiden name : Maria Cruz Fernandez

Married/GC name : Maria Cruz Smith

name on phil passport : Maria Fernandez Smith

My question is that will I have problems traveling in and out of the US if my passport and GC middle name don't match?

You should have no issues.  Just make sure you book your tickets in your passport name and stick a copy of your marriage certificate in with your passport..

You should no issues day to day.  For international travel, do make sure that are airfare is purchased in the name as shown on the BC, and also carry a copy of your marriage certificate.

USCIS is funny with the name regarding the GC, my wife used her married name (traditional) on the I-485 and her green card was issued that way, but I know of others where USCIS would accept that and did it the way as shown on your green card.    Hard reality is that USCIS is only supposed to accept the last name being changed, unless you have court documents for the middle name change.

When you get to the Naturalization stage of this process (if you plan to complete U.S. citizenship) you can change your name officially for free with the N-400 process (check the box).

when I had my GC before i became a US citizen -- i actually did both the Filipino way. I had my maiden name made into my middle name then my new last name is my husband's last name.   I think the GC they based it on your marriage license / certificate as that is what showed on mine.   We got married in the US too.  You can write it on the certificate how you want your new name to be.  Now that you already have that name, then I dont know if you want to have the court change it for you to match everything.  But like what Hank said there should be no problem as your passport shows the name your ticket is under.

IR-5 Petition Parent (this is going to be a long journey)

02.24.2018 - Text Notification received

03.05.2018 - NOA1 Received

My wife has the same exact issue.  We traveled last month and had no problems.

As pointed out by Hank, make sure your ticket is in the name of your passport.

Finally done.
