2 weeks ago I went to a job interview @ CEMEX (MExican cement and concrete business) in Charlotte.. today they called me cuz they want me to work in an entry customer service positon (really good money, way more than I'd make 'round here in the country)... thing is, we got to relocate, and we have several things going on that affects how can I relocate..

my wife is due in Nov, and although the NC school year ends in June and starts back in Aug, she doesn't know if someone will hire her for a couple of months and then have the baby, and then come back.. also, I really don't know a lot about the cost of life in Charlotte, I've been checking some apartments and the rent is not that awful as I thought I'd be, it's just a little bit more than in this area..

so, the plans are.. start inmediatly,me moving first and pay an apartment, and come visit my wife the weekends.. or take a month or so to look for apartments, then move, then she can move (that depends though if she can find a job easily, she says she can probly be a subs-teacher for the time being)... or get a hotel with monthly or weekly fees, live there and just wait for my wife to get a job in that area.. what worries her is not the positions available, she can teach either english or spanish to middle, elementary or high school, but if her pregnancy would affect her hiring..

what would y'all recommend?

Congrats on the new job, Pedroh!

I guess you have to ask yourself if you want to be away from your wife so much given that she's expecting, but just until the end of the school year might not be so bad. The other question is can you afford for her not to work for a while so that she could relocate with you?

It's a tough call - good luck on your decision-making!

You really have to know where to live and where not in Charlotte. There are some pretty bad ghetto areas....

Good areas: Ballantyne, mostly along Providence Road

Bad area: West Sharon road area, Nations Ford Road, Arrowood Road (crime, crime, murder, murder, rape, all that bad stuff)

For a good apartment in a good area you should calculate to pay $700- $800 for a one bedroom (around 800 square feet). I can recommend Cheswyck where we live until we move in 2 weeks to CA. The staff is nice, people who live here are nice, two pools, three tennis courts, Yoga classes, gym, all that.

I'm not sure if pregnancy affects hiring in Charlotte, but NC is more pro-worker rights than pro-company rights, so she might have a shot. Please be aware that there are certain schools you don't wanna teach at, all of those located in the danger zones. There are also a lot of private schools, in case she doesn't want to take a break when the baby is born it's good to try it there. She should contact the board of Mecklenburg schools right away! http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/

If she wants to give birth in Charlotte the Presbyterian hospital is the place to go.

For shopping you have the high-end Southpark Mall, the normal malls in the South (Carolina Place) and a little higher up Northlake Mall and Concord Mills (at Lowe's Motorspeedway) outlet mall.

I hope that helps....

pedroh,

Congratulations on the job offer  . I know the family that owns Cemex from my school days, and this is one company worth working for. They are -at least in Mexico- quite family oriented. But then again, it's your decision, with your wife being due soon and all.- Have you mentioned this to Cemex's HR people? Maybe they can help?

Buena suerte, Lenina.

well I actually found some 2 bedroom apartments for less than 600 a month (actually one for 495 and it's not bad).. it's called Hampton Commons, arround E Harris Blvd, on the NE side of Charlotte (Cemex offices are around there)..

and yeah, probably I will move by myself and start renting a place there, then come back on the weekends, my wife said it's a better idea to move immediatly, so she can move in less than 2 months, before she has a big belly lol

E Harris is where a friend lives. It's ok, but she's not too fond of it... She works for East Meck High. Be sure to pick a gated community in that area.

Congratulations on the move. I am getting ready to relocate to the Tucson area. It's been a little overwhelming getting things set up though. For me, I think it will be a little strange going from mid 70s for summer highs to low 100s. Luckily Flagstaff isn't all that far away so there will be some snow in the winter.

Have you gone over all your benefits and is there a relocation package? Sometimes a company will pay and put you up in temporary housing until you can get a look around the area to see where you want to live. If everything hasn't yet been set in stone, see if they will pay for your first months rent.

Good deal, pedroh. Charlotte is one city we wouldn't mind moving to.

Did you know that Charlotte was once voted one of the 10 most boring cities in the country?
