Not that anyone here has – but what is wrong with berrating the city/state where you live? I mean… if you live there I’m sure you have a perspective on it….

Back home – my town’s local newspaper got all indignant whenever some famous celebrity who originally came from that part of the country made a derogatory comment about the town or its people. They’d go out and do vox-pop surveys to stir up sentiment. Thing is… for all that the town was #######.

I've been listening to 'Oooh, Texas sucks' comments for six years now; I have a pretty low threshold for it at this point. (F)

I'm sure there are people out there who feel the same way about Essex towns. Not me ;)

I agree. I grew up in Essex, being the butt of many an Essex girl joke, having the entire UK nation laughing about my home town. D'ya know what though, I don't actually take it personally. It's life.

It's probably easier now that you're in America, where nobody knows/cares about the reputation of Essex girls.

Same thing. Certainly where I lived it was accurate in most respects (or I could have just be going out in the wrong places).

On one occasion I got called a c*** by one girl for no apparent reason - other than that my friends and I had been sitting in the pub for 2 hours, and her and her mates (who none of us knew) came in, and sat at the next table and were short 1 chair. It was basically "I don't have a chair - give me yours".

Now I find it funny. In fact I was joking about it the other day in another thread on here. I have a "new" car. It is a Ford Escort ZX2 (albeit the USA version) . In the early 90s it was THE car that was synonymous with the Essex boy racer. Essex Girl+Ford Escort=Hilarious. :hehe:

Luckily, I kind of escaped actually turning into the full Essex girl stereotype, simply because of my age. The whole Essex Girl/White Stilletto/Handbag thing had passed by the time I was old enough. But I'm still an Essex Girl and I find it humorous. :D

Nice!

Seriously – it wasn’t even phrased politely, like “may I have your chair”. It was “give me”, no please or anything. I mean outside of a disability, its rather sub-par to ask a complete stranger to give up their chair just because you don’t want to stand up.

Her (Essex) boyfriend was there with her too and didn’t seem too concerned by his g/f acting like a prat in front of a pub full of people. In fact, he seemed keen to start a fight over me telling her “no, you can’t have my chair”.

I’ve had similar (drunk) people try to start fights with me in clubs before – usually over getting served first at the bar. Never went that far – usually found it fairly easy to talk down drunk people, and when it comes down to it – a lot of them don’t have the courage of their convictions anyway.

This is the Southend / Basildon area BTW.

I grew up in Ashingdon, a cute little village about a mile or two away from Southend-On-Sea, so I know the area well. I will say this though, even Sarfend On Sea people can be snobbish about other Essex inhabitants. They look RIGHT down their noses at Basildonites.:lol:

I think it goes both ways there - but you have to laugh at people who are trying to outdo each other to get to the top of the dung pile  I wouldn't recommend either of those places to anyone - and pretty much everyone I know (whose my age) hates that area and is trying to find a way out.

Not a patch on Chelmsford of course. Compared to Sarfend and Basildon - Chelmsford is actually a nice place to live. I used to make a point of driving out there to go shopping, rather than deal with the Chavs and trash tumbleweed in Basildon and Southend town centres...

I know Ashingdon - knew a couple of people who lived there when I was at school.
