Hello Everybody,

My k1 visa just got approved in Montreal on Wednesday (yay) and I plan to move to the USA (Mississippi) in May.

I am bringing my 3 parakeets with me and plan to cross on the Ambassador bridge.

- Anybody has experience crossing with 3 parakeets? Do I need to get a permit for them? Health document?

- Can I bring their food (seed + pellet) with me or need to buy them in the US?

I have a 2007 Pontiac G5, found a sticker under the hood + another at the door but I plan to get the compliance letter from GM.

- How long does it take to get the letter from GM?

- How long is the letter valid? (I think I heard 30 days)

I would appreciate any advice and help. Thank you

I did not move my finch because it would have needed to be quarantined. I'll try to find current details from CDC.

I checked out the site and it seems I don`t need import permit, nor Vet health certificate or quarantine by land, they will have Vet inspection at the port of entry.

For your car, it varies on how long it takes them, but provided there’s no recalls or anything, it should be within 2 weeks.  I don’t think it necessarily expires, but within reason, as long as it’s within 90-180 days of the date of the letter you should be fine.

I brought our cockatiel. What you need to do is call the border you will cross at. Tell them you will be immigrating and you are taking your parakeets. They do not fall in the parrot family and do not need quarantine. But you do need a vet to be at the border when crossing to check the birds out. It cost me $20 and the vet also gave me papers in case there were any issues crossing states.

I had the car pulled into their garage and the vet came down and checked her out. He didn't even want the car window opened. Less then 5 mins and he was done.

No issues bringing her food either.

Update:

My fiance talked to the Vet at the Detroit border. You can import pets Monday to Friday from 8am until noon. Need to call them 3 days before the crossing.

I received the compliance letter from GM, had to replace the Passenger Airbag status indicator display. I went to Highland GM in Aurora (ON) and got it done for $171. GM compliance letter is valid for only 30 days.

Crossing on May 15th, will get a new compliance letter

I successfully imported my 3 parakeets and my car...with k1 visa

Crossed at Ambassador bridge (Detroit)

We previously contacted the Vet at the border who emailed me a Declaration form  (had to write down my car’s license plate and my fiance’s driver’s license number since he was driving my car) and we made an appointment for May 16th at 9am (she is only there Monday to Friday from 8-12). She instructed us to follow the truck line and we told the officer at the booth that we have an appointment with the Vet. We dropped off the birds at the Vet and went to the other building where they check the trucks. They had no officer with k1 experience so they called the other custom to send one, we waited around 40 minutes. The k1 officer was friendly, only told us to make sure get married within 90 days. Nobody checked the Compliance letter, my car or personal stuffs. After we got the importing documents for my car we headed back to the Vet where we got the importing documents for the birds after paid US$40 (no cash) and crossed the bridge around 11am.
