Update Hukou if married outside China?

Hey everyone,

 

Our I-130 petition has been approved and I am preparing documents for NVC IV package. My wife (Chinese Citizen) and I (USC) married and obtained the marriage certificate at the US.

 

Question: For my wife's visa, do we need to update her Hukou to show that we are married in the US? Thanks.

This is unclear - were you married in the US or in China? You say you were married in the US. but my guess is that you have a Chinese marriage certificate, and a white book translation.

 

The white book translation is generally what you will need. The Chinese red book may be used in China.

 

If you have a U.S. marriage certificate, a notarized translation will usually be enough. There is, however, a certification procedure involving your State's Dept. of State, and the Chinese consulate servicing that state for more official usage with the PSB Entry & Exit Bureau.

 

It is unlikely either way that you will be added to her hukou.

Sorry for the confusion. We were married in the US and received an US marriage certificate. We don't have any Chinese marriage certificate (her Hukou still said she has not been married). 

 

My question is: For the rest of her US immigration visa progress, will the US marriage certificate be sufficient enough? Do we need anything else for marriage? Should we also update her Hukou to married status and notarized that for the NVC and consulate?

Since you were married in the US, the marriage certificate you received from the issuing jurisdiction is all that you will need.

Although this has nothing to do with her immigration, NOW is a good time to get that done.

For note, we just finished this process, we had to get our state's department of state to notarize our US marriage certificate, we had to get the US State Department to Notarize it, as well as getting the Chinese Embassy in DC to notarize it. The process is finished, and we are now waiting for the final notarized document to be returned in the mail.
