If i had the opportunity i would go for it what do you have to loose. Be careful watch your back.

What could they possibly do? My resume is already out on the internet; it's not like they're asking for my SSN, credit card numbers, etc.

I guess ppl just assume that Google can't possibly be interested in me.

People assume because Google is inundated with candidates that they would not need to recruit. They ignore the fact that Google may not be inundated with qualified candidates or candidates in the correct fields. I believe it's true that Google recruits extremely aggressively, even though most people would think they don't need to. I say go for it if you want it.

Exactly. I don't think they are inundated with CompSci/Maths MSc/PhD graduates.

HA,

I have heard of scams where someone purporting to represent a big-name employer will call you, interview you (phone interview, and they will call you, you won't call them) and then make you an offer and have you mail in an application. Guess what will be in the application?

Well gee, Gupt, I'm not THAT naive. If they ask me to do that, I'll know it was bullsh!t. A friend of mine (who is pretty much a tech god) checked out these headers for me and he said they looked legit (I've edited out my e-mail address and that of the sender):

Exactly. I don't think they are inundated with CompSci/Maths MSc/PhD graduates.

I'm not a comp sci/math graduate; my degree is in a liberal arts discipline, but I'm one of those extremely rare people who has more than a couple of years' experience in SQA, and I'm one of those extremely extremely rare SQA people who can also design and program. The last year and a half, I worked as a designer/programmer, not as an SQA...but I also did formal structured testing on my own code.

It's unusual for QA people to stay in the field 8 years, like I did, and it's rare for the ones who know how to program to go back to QA. Quality analysts with that much experience are pretty unusual. I'm thinking it may have been someone from my dim and distant past who recommended me; I achieved senior status in QA very early on and in QA circles in Texas my reputation preceded me. I'm not being arrogant; some people are prodigiously talented at sexy things, and I'm prodigiously talented at finding bugs in software. I had recruiters beating a path to my door in Texas, even after the tech market started to really slow down, and I turned down a promotion to move to the UK that would have put me in charge of quality analysis for American Airlines's website and would have jumped my salary from $60k to $80k at the age of 25. :crying: I guess it's just as well that I didn't take the job; it was offered to me in March 2001 and that project came to a screeching halt on 9/11. I didn't know that then though.

I'm sure your very qualified for the job, but did they tell you who the "someone" was? I would be very sceptical if not - most major corporations would most likely use a reputable headhunter to approach people.

Google's own corporate site says that they don't do that. A lot of 'new media' companies like that use their own in-house recruiters. Hell, even the ill-fated marchFIRST did it because it was trendy. marchFIRST didn't use recruiters at all, and they got my details from someone...I still have no idea who it was and I don't particularly care, since I got that job pretty easily.

Are you a member of any professional societies? ACM, IEEE and such?

I'm still trying to figure out how they got my (and your) details.

Hmm...well, I used to be a contributor on StickyMinds.com and I'm a member of PASS (Professional Association for SQL Server), but that's it.

A couple of months ago I got e-mails from a guy at Google wanting to talk to me about opportunities. I immediately assumed it was spam and ignored it. He wrote me a few more times so I forwarded the e-mail with its headers to a friend of mine. He checked it out and said it looked legit, so I followed up on it.

They want to do a phone interview and they seem extremely interested; I've never had a company come on this strong before. They said they got my resume from "someone" but I've checked with my friends and nobody is copping to sending my resume to Google, and I don't know anyone who works there.

What I'm getting at is...has anyone had interest from Google, is this sort of interest normal, etc.?

Yes, Homesick, this is normal for them. When I did my HR certificate program here, I had two Google recruiters in the same class with me, and they had a presentation on Google's recruiting techniques. What you described sounds exactly like what they do - persistent headhunting :)

This is a great company to work for, and I would at least check it out

Now I'm paranoid, so I checked on Google's corporate site and looked at their telephone numbers, which all seem to use the 253 exchange. The number given to me by the Google recruiter begins (650) 253 as well.

If the guy is a scammer, he's very attentive to the little details.

That's a relief.   Thanks!

I'm pursuing the lead...a job's a job...and even though their Dallas office doesn't do the sort of work I do, they're open to me doing a job based in Cupertino from my house in Dallas.

Hey a phone call can't hurt if it is something that may actually be of interest to you.

Good luck with all of this.

...and the 650 number you mentioned previously - that's in Mount View, California where Google is based so perhaps you are onto a great lead.

Kinda sucks though as my husband has actually applied there 2/3 times, being a high-level Director of Application Development and couldn't even get an interview, even with having a Master's Degree and 20 years experience.

Hope it works out for you!

That's weird; he sounds like just the kind of person they want. Weirds me out a little...why me and not him?
