A couple of months ago I got e-mails from a guy at Google wanting to talk to me about opportunities. I immediately assumed it was spam and ignored it. He wrote me a few more times so I forwarded the e-mail with its headers to a friend of mine. He checked it out and said it looked legit, so I followed up on it.

They want to do a phone interview and they seem extremely interested; I've never had a company come on this strong before. They said they got my resume from "someone" but I've checked with my friends and nobody is copping to sending my resume to Google, and I don't know anyone who works there.

What I'm getting at is...has anyone had interest from Google, is this sort of interest normal, etc.?

be careful. they may appear harmless but if unsolicited, follow it up with a phone call and do some major checking on the company yourself.

I've received similar offers from Google but never followed up.

Google is #1 on this year's list of "100 Best Companies to Work For",

so I'd definitely go for if I were you (assuming you're interested.)

Yeah definitely check it out

Ophra did a special on the best companies to work for and Google was top on the list. During her research, it was stated that there is a waiting list for applicants. I guess they are one of the most applied to companies. I can't see that they would have recruiters or would even need them at all. During the show she said they had over 3,000 applications and will have even more now that she announced them on her show. They are supposed to be a great company to work for.

I have no idea how or why they figured me for a Unix expert or software

developer, but here's what I got from them. It was probably a shot in

the dark.

Hi Mark,

My name is Shriram Gharpure and I am a Recruiter for the Google.com (SRE) at

Google. The Google.com (SRE) team is the most dynamic, challenging and fun

group at Google. The Google.com group is responsible for our Google website

from start to finish and it is different from the Operations group.

I wanted to ping you to see if you may be interested in opportunities in

this group. We are constantly seeking extraordinary developers and UNIX

(Linux) experts such as yourself to join our exciting team and growing

organization. We have positions open in the USA in Mountain View (CA), Santa

Monica (CA), New York (NY), and Kirkland (WA) as well as Dublin (Ireland)

and Zurich (Switzerland); and we could relocate you to any of these

locations of your choice. I am enclosing the links to the job descriptions

of two positions that I feel may be a great match for you.

If you feel that either of these positions is something that may be of

interest to you, please send me an email so we can schedule a time for me to

call you to speak with you to discuss more details. I hope you are not

bothered by my networking attempt. If you are not interested or available,

but would like to forward my name and contact information to your friends or

colleagues, I would be most delighted.

Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

Best Wishes,

Shriram Gharpure

What could they possibly do? My resume is already out on the internet; it's not like they're asking for my SSN, credit card numbers, etc.

I guess ppl just assume that Google can't possibly be interested in me.

HA,

I have heard of scams where someone purporting to represent a big-name employer will call you, interview you (phone interview, and they will call you, you won't call them) and then make you an offer and have you mail in an application. Guess what will be in the application?

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
