Qualifications advice

Hi there,

 

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice regarding how UK qualifications are perceived in the US

 

I am currently in the K-1 Visa process and I am thinking ahead to work.

 

I have 10 years of experience in my field (vocational) however I obviously don't have US qualifications. Some of the jobs I have looked at require a High School Diploma or GED. I have GCSEs/A Level but are these qualifications 'accepted' in the USA or do I have to take the GED and relevant qualifications in the USA?

 

I'm aware I could get certificates of equivalency and I know companies do provide these services but primarily I'm wondering how the US views foreign education.

 

If, for example, on an electronic application form where there is no room for explanation, if it asks if I have a high school diploma/GED education do I tick Yes or No?

Can depend on the company honestly. If you have good experience, they can overlook certain criteria.

 

Obviously some educational standards must be verified, such as university stuff and all, but from UK to US shouldn't be an issue. 

 

Most people I think have found unless they find the right company, some people have to start at a "lower" position first to build US experience.

 

My husband started off like that while he found another job in the position he desired, he even has a degree and some prior US work experience with internships but still had to start off lower for about 5-6 months until the other opportunity came.

A levels are formally equivalent to a US high school diploma (actually slightly ahead, some universities even give college credit for completed A levels). That said, a formal equivalency certificate to append to a resume is probably worthwhile especially if you’re job-seeking outside places with lots of internationals.
