Received Combo Card (EAD/AP), What's Next?

Hello,

I hope everyone is having happy holidays and a Happy New Year is around the corner!

We received the Combo Card on December 28, 2018, and were just wondering if we can immediately start using it or if we need to do something first. I am not sure why, it just sits in the back of my mind that there is something additional that needs to be done before use, but I can't think of what that might be! My husband wants to apply for a new job or get a second job to help me out a little bit. Please advise!

Thank you!

Have a nice day!

He can start working.

So, does he have to give his new combo card information to HR? He was working under the student EAD card which is about to expire in February. Or should he wait until February to give the new card to HR?

Congrats!

He should go ahead and tell HR about the EAD so that they can update his employment. This EAD is more powerful than student EAD as it has no limitation on what job he can take so he can definitely work a second job like driving Uber during free time at night.

A friend of mine having PD 07/30 got her EAD/AP on 12/24, and your husband got the card on 12/28 with PD 07/31.

My PD is 08/01, hoping the combo card will come really soon.

Agree. I manage HR for my company and have encountered a few cases where F1 or H1 was replaced with AOS EAD. Since the F1 EAD was going to expire soon anyway, and the AOS is technically the most recent status, he should just go ahead and have his HR update with the AOS EAD. As long as there is some kind of valid employment authorization, HR usually doesn't care. In fact, in cases where you suspect he's getting paid a lower wage because his employment auth was tied to his status (i.e. in case of OPT) this is a way to gain freedom of employer (and sometimes a market "adjustment" of wages).

Congrats and happy holidays!

He needs to get a SSN if he doesn't have one. Only the EAD isn't enough to work.

He already has the SSN from a past EAD card. But thank you for the tip!
