Is it mandatory to activate CR/IR-1 Visa at first crossing?

Hi there, 

 

I am a Canadian citizen who has recently obtained my IR-1 visa. I am still in Canada and would like to know if it is possible for me to go to the US and NOT have them activate my visa when I cross. I have every intention to return home to Canada a few days later. I will have documents proving domicile with me. I don't want my visa activated because I still have work obligations in Canada after I come back from a short trip. 

 

Any experience with this scenario? Any information would be appreciated.

If they see the immigrant visa, they will use that. But what's the issue with them doing so...? The endorsed visa acts as a green card for 1 year (until the physical card comes in the mail). Yo can re-enter using that.

Crossing by land? If so, you can use a Nexus card or enhanced driver's licence if available in your province.  

 

Otherwise, Canadians have had mix success crossing and but activating their visa.

 

Geowrian: many reasons to not want to activate the visa - living in Canada after giving up residency, one would need to purchase private health insurance, give up children's benefits, etc.
