Surrender French Drivers license to get Oregon DL?

Hello, 

 

My wife is applying to get an Oregon Driver's License. Everything is smooth sailing document wise, but the one weird part is on the site it mentions 

  • You must turn in any driver license or permit from another state or country if you have one.

 

Does this mean she would lose her French license? She has her green card and is not a citizen yet. I feel like the French Drivers license is the property of France and there should be reimbursement (French DL is pricey) at the very least. It really doesn't seem legal.

 

Does anyone have experience with this?

Yes that is completely normal. Some ppl will argue and try to keep the license others just comply. Some states don't require you hand it over some do. Also they don't have to give her a license if she doesn't hand it over. 

 

I had to give them mine in order to get a Arkansas license. I didn't argue with them but I did try to keep it. So it depends just how much do you want to push it.

My wife hopefully will be doing her permit in a few weeks. This is a rule that makes no sense, at all. If you have a foreign drivers license, by most states, they tend not to accept it anyways, unless you are on a tourist visa.  Giving up a EU DL is insanity. I know when i lived there, in Germany you pay so much for it, to give it away :S  It will be for them....she is a new driver. Not loosing another document to be cut up in half and discarded.

10/17/2018                After 136 days of wait in HELL, finally EAD in production

10/21/2018                Card was mailed to me, and yes it said so on a Sunday night, while Vj-ing

10/22/2018                Card was picked up by the USPS

10/24/2018                EAD in hand. F%^&& finally

12/28/2018                Interview has been scheduled. Waiting for notification with date by snail mail

Not only is it normal from country to country but sometimes it is also a policy when moving from state to state in the US.
