Hello all!

I am the beneficiary of our K1-visa application. My fiance and I recently got our NoA 2 and we are currently waiting to get onto our next steps with the NVC and my part here in Finland. We are both a tad unsure as to whether or not we should use a co-sponsor or not for our application. It seems that having a co-sponsor might hurt the process itself.

my fiance has been employed in a very good job for the last 9 months, and her contract is full-time as well. She makes 30 dollars an hour and works 40 hours per week, putting her annual income to roughly 62 000 dollars. She also has about 7000 dollars in savings. Looking at pure numbers, and based on my understanding, the annual income requirement for her would be 25 100 dollars. On paper it sounds more or less like there should be no problem, but the fact is that she didn't have much of an income at all last year. The reason for this is because she lived with me in Finland and studied here from February 2017 to December 2017. While studying here, she had no income, but lived off of her savings and my income at the time.

Like I said, we are a bit unsure as to whether we should use a co-sponsor at this moment or not. Main reason being, if the previous year affects the decision-making process of the embassy and/or USCIS. Additionally, during our K1-process she has lived with her family in order to earn  more by saving on rent and at the same time she has been paying off her student loans. This puts her current household size to 3. My Fiance's father is more than happy to be a co-sponsor and has already printed god knows how many pay stubs, but I figured asking here would be a good idea to get some more perspective on this.

  • Having co-sponsor, in the worse case, does not help but it won't hurt either.  They will look into the petitioner's ability to support the beneficiary financially first and determine of a joint-sponsor is needed.
  • 9 months should be good enough as the income comes from a stable source.

:) the choice is yours but based on the info you provided, both options should not have any problem.

I concur, but the household size does not change simply because she lives at her parent's house.  You can't combine income in a K1 visa case anyway.  Household size is 2 unless she has a child or children.

Whether her income qualifies depends on whether she is an "employee" or self employed.  You mentioned a "contract".  Is it an employment contract, or is she a non-employee "contractor"?  You should be ok if she's "employed".  If she is not, you need a cosponsor.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
