Some of these calls for respect for the dead seem to be coming from the same people who rejoiced in the death of Saddam.

eta: not comparing Falwell to Saddam in any way, just saying you can't have it both ways.

True. It's working the other way around though, too.

I just can't understand rejoicing in anyone's death, Falwell included.

Agreed. While I never liked anything Falwell did in his life, that doesn't mean I feel happy he's dead.

I don't feel sad that he's dead either, but have some sympathy for his family at the least.

The man is dead, let it be. What is the point in reveling in someone's death, even if you hate them? Life in the US is so horrible, isn't it? Yeah, we have freedom of speech but do we have respect for the dead, even if we detest the dead person? Pitiful.

I don't know much about Falwell because I was not interested in what he had to say. I have my own personal beliefs which I keep to myself. If he was a hatemongerer while he was alive, it does not justify hatemongerers celebrating his death. There are many more creative, sophisticated and effective ways to affect political and religious change than ranting on a message board for immigration.

Hundreds of people of historical significance are dead and we talk about them constantly. Is that pitiful? Is it pitiful to express an opinion about how one lived their life when that particular person did so in public, through the media, and at the expense of anyone he deemed unfit for this earth?

I am not reveling, I am expressing disgust for this man and anyone who sees fit to defend him.

Anyone who defends this sick fuc!k of a man posing as God's rep on earth really needs their heads examined. And, yes, we can judge people based on their deeds, because we are mortal, of this earth, and that is all we know, especially those of us who don't lose their minds in this whole god thing. And Falwell's deeds were disgusting, sick, unforgivable.

Your opinion...and some ppl have differing ones.

Uh huh. Profound.

How can one claim God cares to judge a fornicator over judging a lying, conniving bully? I guess you would if you are the lying, conniving bully.

Who is rejoicing, Jenn? I said I'm disgusted by anyone who thinks just because someone is dead, we can't say what we honestly think about how that person lived their life. And Falwell was a sick bigot of a man. I also said it's disgusting to me that anyone would defend his actions just because he might have "made right with god" in his dying seconds.

Suddenly men of history can't be discussed? Please.

I think hoping that someone is in hell and hoping that others similar to him will be next is inappropriate. Just my opinion.

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said that men of history can't be discussed. Please yourself.

Don't you have anything better than unsubstantiated personal attacks?

Gee Charles, I knew you were dense, but I didn't realize you didn't know enough about history to know how totally substantive my attack on Falwell is.

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said that men of history can't be discussed. Please yourself.

Please read the thread rather than get pissy. Alex was referring to the Saddam threads wherein many of the people here who are "sad" Falwell is dead were rejoicing about Saddam "deserving" what he got. The man was murdered without a fair trial, while our so-called free, democratic nation looked on, with mostly thrill. And now in this thread I say Falwell was a disgusting bigot, and homesick made some sarcastic comments about firey pits of hell because people brought up Saddam being worse than Falwell. And others insist he can make right with god in his dying seconds, even though we're all at fault for 9/11 because we allow homosexuality in this country. And this is the same thing? Where? How? The man died of natural causes for #######'s sake. There is nothing similar.

So again, I ask you, who is rejoicing in his death? Who isn't reading but putting words into posters' mouths?

Notice a difference?

How can you arrive at the need to make that post having read that I was specifically not comparing the two people?

Death is death, and if we're going to respect it no matter who it is, we need to be consistent there. What part of that didn't make sense?

I'm not really "up" on US big R "Religous" leaders but i read his Wikipedia entry.. and holy cow.. the guy has history I for sure didn't know about :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Falwell

One thought that crossed my mind was if it had been Rev. Billy Graham who had passed away, I think our discussion of his death would be significantly different.
