Travel- Passport Question!!

Hello, everyone

 

I have my oath ceremony on 8/17/2018 and plan to apply my passport on that day but I have cruise coming up 9/14/2018. 

 

My question is that if I dont get my US passport in time, can I use my Korean passport which doesn't expire until 2021?

You need to enter the US on your US passport. Since you're going on a cruise I would suggest to apply for the passport card also.

Thanks but you dont need a passport card if you have a passport. Save you money!

Personally I like to have it even though I'm not going on a cruise any time soon. It's an additional proof of citizenship and I keep it in my wallet. It's not that much more money.

I like my passport card too. It fits in my wallet, and it’s a primary form of identification.it works for domestic flights, and you can travel over land borders to Mexico, Canada.

Interesting. 

I have always used my drive license as a primary form as identification for last 20 years. when I travel domestically, they only ask for drive license and tickets.  I only carry my passport when I travel internationally.

Did you use expediated service for your passport? it looks like you received in 3 weeks from applying a passport.

I used regular service. The guy at the post office told me that the passport card is a real ID, don’t know if you you some states drivers licenses are not compliant so that’s why I opted for it. It was only $35 and it’s 10 years. In Massachusetts a drivers license cost $125 so it’s a good deal I think.

Just expedite it. We got ours in 10 days using the exedited service. Even had tracking, and updates.

I applied for my passport right after my oath ceremony at my local post office and used routine service because I was not planning on traveling any time soon. I received the passport book in 14 days and the passport card in 16 days. And that was without any expedite so you’ll have plenty of time to get your documents before your cruise.

Did they require that you mail the certificate with the application?

Yes. And I got it back in the mail the same day I received my passport.

I was also told if you do a passport book renewal,  you can mail in your passport card as primary form of identification or your passport book which works well if you for example are living abroad and want to hang on to your passport book. So i rather paid a little more now, but now on the long run it’s better.

You are required to send in your most recent passport.

I was told you can send in your most recent passport card or book.  Both serve as primary form of identification. Its on the state department website. Not something i made up.

That's why I love having the passport card.
