Hello All--have a quick question; does anyone know the order of steps for N-400 processing at USICS? I was under the impression that background check is conducted after you've gone in for your biometrics, and if passed that leads to the interview.

I had applied for N-400, did my biometrics, went it for interview, and they didn't make a decision based on the fact that I-751 was still pending. 3 weeks ago, my I-751 was approved and I received the actual card in the mail. However, when I called and also went in for an infopass appointment, the lady at the desk told me that my interviewing office was waiting for name-check to come back and once that was done he would be able to make a decision. That just sound weird to me, because I was under the impression they don't even interview before background checks are completed.

There is one more funny fact to it; when I went it to my infopass appointment to check the status on my I-751 petition, that lady gave me the same exact response! She had said, "my interviewing office is waiting for name-check to come back and once that's done he would be able to make a decision." That was 4 weeks ago, and within a week afterwards I received my card in the mail. It just doesn't make sense. I mean clearly my background check was done and that's why they were able to approve my I-751, so what's the point of conducting the same background check after a few days again? Something just doesn't add up...

Any thoughts anyone?

You're probably over thinking this. The entire immigration process from start to finish is one long continuous series of background checks. I wouldn't assume you're done with background checks until you're reciting the oath, and even then, there's an effort underway to re-examine applications of US Citizens to see if there were any misrepresentations leading to revocation of citizenship. Welcome to America.
