Mexico has long pushed the United States to allow more Mexicans to work legally in the U.S. But the U.S. Congress has focused instead on strengthening border security.

We should just annex Mexico to make it part of the US...

In 1993-1997, 48 percent of Mexicans who traveled to the United States entered the country illegally. That percentage jumped to 68 percent between 1998-2001 and to 78 percent from 2001-2005, mostly because of stricter security measures tied to the Sept. 11 attacks.

I'd be interested to see if the number of Mexicans entering overall was the same, with just a greater proportion EWI, which would suggest that the demand is relatively constant, but that greater security measures driving people underground.

Didn't someone say recently that a lot of Mexicans get shot as they try to cross the border?

I've never heard of that but I think shooting border jumpers would be a bit extreme. I can't imagine that's policy. Well maybe in Texas. :P

I wouldn't say a lot of them do. They're not jumping over the Berlin Wall or anything, though you couldn't tell some people around here that. Obviously there's no reason to shoot them unless they're holding a weapon and about to shoot you.

On Mexico's southern border, I hear illegal crossers are routinely shot, beaten, killed, etc. US border patrol guards are apparently cuddly fuzzy bunnies compared to their Mexican counterparts.

perhaps by south of the border drug smugglers and competing coyotes.

Can you clarify what you're particularly upset about - the illegal nature of migration or the increase of Mexican population in the U.S.?

I think he is pointing out the irony of the fact that Mexico looses more people to (illegal) migration to the US than death. Your attempt to make it a racist issue is the upsetting part.

Exactly !! It always seems that when someone can't defend a position that they throw the 'race' card!!

Which doesn't work real well here especially!! Since a lot of us here on VJ are in mixed race marriages!!

Are we 'racist' and don't even know it??? Give me a break!!

So, how long before Pedroh shows up with an "oh, nooo, brown people! pwned!" remark?

really

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
