Citizenship for LPR child

I am a US citizen and my child (age 4) just moved to the US and got his permanent resident card.

 

During the NVC processing, I had to submit the I864W because they told me that I have to waive the financial support as he would become a US citizen on entry. So my question is will the USCIS send a certificate of citizenship or do I have to apply for it on his behalf? If I have to apply for it is it the N-600 form? How soon after the N-600 can I apply for his passport?

He should be a USC now, but he lacks evidence of this. You can either file an N-600 to get a naturalization certificate, or (preferably) apply for a US passport. A US passport is evidence of US citizenship. Plus it's a passport...which is more useful than just a certificate IMO.

when applying for a passport would I need to give his proof of citizenship or will his green card suffice?

It's been a while since I've looked this up, so please check with the official source (DOS) to confirm passport requirements. But it should be:

  • Evidence that he is an LPR (his green card).
  • Evidence that he is your son (his birth certificate)
  • Evidence that he is the son or daughter of a USC (your birth or naturalization certificate, or US passport should suffice).
  • Potentially your marriage certificate.
