AOS, AED Biometric ID requirement

Hi All

My Vietnamese wife will go to her biometrics appointment at a local USCIS Application Support Center.   The appointment letter says to bring a "picture ID".   She was married last month and her surname changed to husband's surname.  Her only form of ID she has is her Vietnamese passport with her maiden name.  Will her Vietnamese passport and certified copy of the Marriage certificate can be used to meet the photo ID requirement for the biometrics appointment?

My understanding is that the Vietnamese embassy will only will note her name change in the passport and still show her maiden name on the Bio page of the passport.  I have not done the name update on her Vietnamese passport.  Should I do this so it can be used as a form of ID to show at the biometrics appointment?

Thanks in advance.

I took my Dutch passport with my maiden name and a certified copy of our marriage certificate to my biometrics appointment, and I had no problems. When I was asked for my ID, I showed my passport and said it was still in my maiden name and gave the officer the marriage certificate. I think they see many newlyweds who have not had a chance to update their IDs yet.

Thank you very much for letting me know.  That's good to hear.

I just called my travel agent to assist with name update on the  Vietnamese passport and was told I need to submit her copy of green card, marriage certificate and original passport.   it seems catch-22 to me   Glad that I don't have to do it for now.

Great question - I actually ran into some issue at the biometrics appointment as my passport/driver's license was not reflecting my husband's surname, which I took when we got married. Luckily the biometrics office was not too far away and we rushed home to get our copy of the marriage certificate which has my new married name. The lady then accepted it as proof of identity.

I learned my lesson and from now on will always make sure to bring these with me until I have all my documents updated to reflect my 'new' name:
- original copy (NOT photocopy) of the marriage certificate
- passport
- driver's license

I hear you.   I tried opening a joint account at a bank and tried using my wife's Vietnamese passport still with her maiden name and certified copy of the marriage certificate as a form of a ID but they would not accept it.    I ended up arguing with the bank manger and only option was to open a joint account in her maiden name.

Yeah, it's all very complicated and frustrating. It takes forever to get the married name through everywhere.

I had no problem opening a bank account in my married name, maybe because my husband already had an account there and knows all the employees at our local branch.

I had problems changing my social security card to my married name. They wanted to see my EAD first. Then when my EAD arrived, I signed my paperwork for my new job the next day (in my married name, that was also on my EAD). Then there was a problem with e-verify, because the names on my social security card and EAD didn't match. So I had to take off a few hours from work in my first week to go back to the social security office and finally get my name changed...

Just hang in there! You'll slowly get it all changed to her married name, one agency at a time...

It's unfortunate that you had problems with your SSN name change.  My wife took her SSN card with her maiden name, certified copy of marriage certificate and her Vietnamese passport with unexpired I-94.  They took back her SSN card because it had her maiden name on it.  We waited about 4 weeks and her new SSN card arrived with the name change.

I suppose local banks follow different state rules and regulations.  Glad that your husband had such influence at the bank.
