I am in a process to apply and want to use my 5 year rule, I completely agree that less paperwork is less stress! can someone answer me if I can apply as soon as I hit 5 years or I should wait a little longer after the 5 years? and what kind of paperwork will be required if I don`t have to submit proof of ongoing marriage? i have the N400 and the fee and the cover letter ... what else?

thank you everyone

You may want to consider filing online: https://myaccount.uscis.dhs.gov/

You will need to create an account on this site, and once it is created you can complete your N-400 online - at the end of it, in the evidence tab, it will give you an idea of what to upload. File can be in PDF or image format (JPG/JOG is most popular).

No cover letter would be required.  You will need to upload a copy of your green card (front and back).

If I am not mistaken you can apply 90 days before you reach 5 years of residency.

I was in the same situation and just followed the prompts to file online, I think it took me to the 5-year rule as I did not have to show anything but green card and marriage cert. It did not ask for me to take tax returns to interview either but asked for husbands birth cert. We don't have it so I took his passport instead but the only thing he asked to see at my interview was my green card and home countries passport. Apply online it took less than two months from day I applied to interview today. All done, now waiting for ceremony. Super easy process, good luck.

This is what I'm struggling with. We're coming up on our 8 year wedding anniversary at the end of the month and I STILL HAVEN'T APPLIED.

I'll have to ask a friend of mine that just finished her last year which one she did , too. Less paperwork would be LOVELY! :D
