Hi,
On July 07 2016, I went to visit Niagara Falls from United States and I tried to cross the bridge that joins Canada and US. I’m from Dominican Republic and by that time I had a US Student Visa (J-1). Before crossing the bridge, I had asked people there, even a security officer, if I was allow to enter Canada with just my US visa and they told that there shouldn’t be any problem and I would only need passport, and indeeed I had it. When I was in the Canadian side of the bridge with intention of entering Canada, I went through immigration and they took me to their office and asked for my documents. After some time, they explained me that I couldn’t go to Canada because I didn’t have permission as I had thought. They gave a piece of paper that said “Allow to leave Canada” with the details of the incident. My question is, how does that affect me for the future? Will I be able to apply for a US or Canadian visa without major difficulty? Is there any way for me to check my status or record?

Thank you.

I am from Canada and can tell you, if you voluntarily left it does not affect you in the future.  You most likely signed a voluntary exit form.

Indeed. I left voluntarily and signed a form with the following statement : “I hearby voluntarily withdraw my application to enter Canada and agree to leave Canada without delay”.

Thank you.

You won't have a problem in future then.

Thank you to you all for your responses.

I asked this because I applied for a US tourist visa about 10 months after that incident and it was declined. I couldn't help but think that the reason why the refused my application had something to do with that experience, but it looks like it was for other motives.

How well could you demonstrate strong ties to your current country of residence? That’s the #1 reason for denial.

Unlike some other countries, US generally doesn’t care what happens with you at other borders, it’s usually only concerned with anything abnormal or wrong you may have done wrt US immigration in the past.
