ok. I think I will try and use my assets first and have a backup i864 from myself and dad doing joint sponsorship if it isn't approved based on my assets alone.

I'm not sure you understand yet.

You have only one I-864. What do you mean backup I-864 from yourself?

Your backup is only an I-864 from Dad as joint sponsor.

hi. I understand. but on the i864 I have to either tick a box saying I am the only sponsor or I am a joint sponsor. so I would need two versions- one saying I am the only sponsor and using my assets. the second "backup" version which is my i864 with the box ticket I am a joint sponsor and my dads as a joint sponsor as well...make sense?

no,

the petitioner is always the primary sponsor, the petitioner can never be a joint sponsor

so anyway, in both cases you will fill out the i864 as the sponsor, I am the sponsor

whether you are the sole sponsor and add your assets or you have a joint sponsor, which he would fill out another i864 as your joint sponsor,

regardless you will always fill out the i864 as the sponsor, that doesn't change

You are the SPONSOR. Never called a joint sponsor. You are always 1.a.

  • Item Number 1.a. Select this box if you are the petitioner who is filing or who has already led Form I-129F, Petition for Alien Fiancé(e), for a fiancé ancé(e); Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, for a family member; Form I-600, Petition to Classify Orphan as an Immediate Relative, for an orphan; or Form I-800, Petition to Classify Convention Adoptee as an Immediate Relative, for a convention adoptee.

On Dad's form, he is 1.d.

  • Item Number 1.d. Select this box if you are the only joint sponsor.

On a different unrelated topic that you may be able to help with that I've opened in another thread as well but I am trying to sort out my husbands medical form for his medical exam he has first week of Feb. He's called his GP for his health summary and they've emailed it to him but it has no mention of when he had surgery when he was 16 to have his tonsils removed. I don't want him to tick the box no that asks "Have you been hospitalised" because if he does and the GP looks in his throat and sees he has no tonsils...that will be a problem.

Do you know if we would need his GP to write a letter about the surgery? they don't seem to have any record of it. Or could he write a letter explaining it? Could this come from somewhere else.

My involvement with NHS is very minimal and I have no idea how it all works as I've only ever been to the GP maybe twice while living here...

Any advice or help is much appreciated!

My advice is to tell the truth.  The truth does not always have documentation to back it up. ;)
