Hi, apologies if this has been answered previously. My US fiancé and I are planning to get married next summer, now my divorce is finalised, however my ex husband left me in a lot of debt and I am currently in an IVA which has another 3 years on it. I will if course make provisions to pay the same when I move over to the states I am just curious as to whether this would have an affect on my application for a visa? What sort of background checks are undertaken? I already have a CRB due to my work.  I am also a registered midwife so intend to work upon entering the US. If anyone has any advice that would be great thanks.

I dunno but don't make the mistake I did of asking them what's so damn interesting about the stool sample and what they are looking for there.  The CO won't think that's funny.

There is a list of things (crimes, activities etc) that would make you inadmissible so I would assume they check your background against their list.  They probably check other things like eligibility to marry, etc but I never heard about debt being an issue.

I don't know the answer to your question either but remember if you come here as a fiance, you can't work until your AOS/EAD is processed which is often 4-6 months. Have you applied for a k1 yet? If you havent, you may not be here by next summer anyway, processing times are long now so definitely don't book anything presuming you will be here by a certain date.

Lastly, make sure you check the requirements of nurse midwife here, which in sure you will. I've been an RN for 15 years and looked into being a nurse in the UK and it was vastly different.

Thank you for this, yes it is slightly different to here in the UK but that’s one thing I seem to know about! Thanks for your advices x

Its a criminal background check in relation to terrorism etc.  Your police check from the UK will reveal any arrests etc. Otherwise they do not really care.

Obviously you have to pass any vertification and certification to be able to practice midwifery here and have oodles of liability insurance.
