Hi,

I'm trying to file the FOIA form, there seems to be different info needed online vs mailing,  At any rate, the physical form that you mail in shows you need a notary signature and it is all in English and wants the persons info that notarizes it.  It would seem that that means the only notary could be from the U.S.  That makes no sense as he lives in Mexico and there are not generally US notaries there.

Has anyone run into this trying to get the FOIA info?

Thanks!

You can just sign a statement that you are the person seeking (your) records. From the government website:

Are there special requirements for obtaining records on myself?

If you are seeking records on yourself you will be required to provide a certification of your identity. This certification is required in order to protect your privacy and to ensure that private information about you is not disclosed inappropriately to someone else. Whenever you request information about yourself you will be asked to provide either a notarized statement or a statement signed under penalty of perjury stating that you are the person who you say you are.

Consular officers in the American Citizen Services unit in the Embassy notarize documents for use in the US.

That includes all 9 Consulates General in Mexico, too.  There is no other place to get a document notarized overseas for use in the US.  If you use a local notary, you then would need to get an apostile on that document -- which would still involve going to an ACS unit.

ACS means American Citizens Services (unit) at a US Consulate, of which there are 9 in Mexico.
