I just wanted to add that I have been reading more stuff.

The idea that he was offered no help at all is wrong.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/worl...icle1668735.ece

"Police sources said that in recent weeks Cho had been treated for depression, had begun to stalk women and had tried to start a fire in a campus dormitory. His first victim, whom he shot in her dormitory at 7.15am on Monday, was Emily Hilscher, 18, a first-year student. Police were investigating whether she had rejected his advances or if the two had ever been romantically linked.

Cho was in the fourth year of an English course and his creative writing was so disturbing that he had been referred to the university’s counselling service. ..."

We can't just assume that because he did this, no one tried to help him. When any help is offered, if you don't want the help then what can they do.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I was with my ex-wife for nearly 7 years and while things weren't great I thought we were working it out. Just before the end of our marriage I found out she was romantically involved with her boss. Nice, eh? Needless to say that didn't work out. ;) Anyway, I can't say I considered anything as crazy as murder suicide but I can say was miserable and depressed. It took me several months to adjust to living alone again. Oh, and going from a DINC to a SINC is *not* easy. Hopeless and depression are one thing. Premeditated mass murder is another.

I don't believe people are "born evil", but I do think you can have a predilection to certain behaviours. Everyone who commits suicide I think has one thing in common - that whatever traumatic event has befallen them - whether it be loss of a job or relationship breakup simply can't see beyond it and that their problem is insurmountable. Clearly it isn't - and people respond to things in different ways, but there really are people who seem to believe that suicide is the only answer, rather than actually finding constructive ways to deal with things.

Premedidated mass murder I think implies a degree of anger or frustration on top of that to project whatever negative emotions the person has onto other people.

If he had just started getting treatment, statistically, that makes him more likely to take action (whether it would be suicide, homicide, whatever), since it's usually the first few weeks where the person is recovering enough to have a sense of agency, but not enough not to be depressed.

i don't agree. they are just pointing out who he is. if he were american they'd name the city he's from. so would that spark hatred for people from __insert city here, usa?

i don't hate korean people any more because he did it. people who would are completely ignorant.(which i realize there are plenty of) ha anyone with half a brain could differentiate this.

It seems to me that in the US people tend to mention the place of birth of every person left and right. Whenever you hear the news, it's always like: "John Dow from Austin, Texas" or "Jane Dow from Nashville, Tennessee". I never understood that. Why does it matter where a person was born? With this stupid a--hole shooter it matters even less, cause he moved to the US when he was like, eight. Gimme a break, that totally makes him an American. I have been Yet the media will still call him Korean and try to explain to the public what a "permanent resident" is.

This guy was such a mess - he had been a loner all his life (at least that's what I've read in the papers), and I wonder why his parents didn't care and didn't do a thing about it earlier.

I think the reason the American media names where anyone newsworthy is from (this includes criminals, celebrities, politicians, etc) is because Americans are very state and local-minded. Ask most Americans where they are from, and the majority won't say, "The United States of America." They'll say, "Austin, Texas" or "Nashville, Tennessee" or whatever city and state combination. This is more true with some states than others (as some states tend to lend a certain "state pride" to their citizenry), but overall, Americans really do identify with their city and state more than their country.

As for the shooter, he was not an American citizen. He was a permanent resident, so regardless of how many years he was here, he wasn't an American. So that does in fact make him Korean (South Korean, to be exact) and if any media outlets are the least bit responsible, they will attempt to explain what a "permanent resident" is and the difference between "legal" and "illegal" immigration. Unfortunately, it seems many Americans lack that necessary bit of understanding and just lump all immigrants under the heading of "undesirable," regardless of how they came to be here.

careful, you're starting to sound like a liberal.

i've heard today that the shooter's father committed suicide successfully today, and the mother attempted suicide unsuccessfully.

Why do they have to report nationality? It is irrelevant, and is sort of inducing stereotypes to readers who already hate Koreans.

Who hates Koreans?

I dont hate Koreans, I do hate kimchee, and also Kia cars, lol, but ill say this, Korea was the only place id ever been routinely discriminated against in my life.
