learning to drive in California

I've been reading a lot of conflicting information about this that I hope someone can clear up for me. I am currently waiting for my AOS. I have a SSN and my EAD should arrive any day now. I don't hold any kind of driving licence at all so I would be looking to learn from scratch in California. Am I able to do this without permanent residency status? I've read stuff to the contrary. What documents do I require?

You will need a Learners Permit which you will get from the DMV. As long as you bring those documents, your passport, and a bill showing your address on it then you will be fine. Also make sure you get insurance or added on your spouses.

Did the very same in California.

 

You need two proof of address (Rental lease/ Phone bill/ Bank Insurance etc).

 

Also a print out of your i94 which you can get online.

 

take all the above mentioned documents and que infront of your DMV around 6am, and they should start your process, pass your theory exam and youll get a permit. 

 

Permit allows you to take driving lesson. Afterwards book your driving test, and once you pass youll recieve it in the mail in about a weel
