Which visa has been in process for 2 years? The F-1? I haven't seen an F-1 that takes so long because it is to study in the US so there is a deadline for that.

If my partner  and  I  get married in  Canada as I'm from  the  UK will  I be able to  enter  the  USA with  her  or  will I  have  to  return  to the  UK  ? Any  info will be  gratefully  received   thanks

If you want to come to the US faster (because you mention a son) maybe apply for K-1 (fiance visa) because it takes 8 months. You will get the visa and get to the US to get married.

But maybe I am missing something. You need to provide more information so that people who know more about this can get you better information.

Yes she  is  a American  citizen and  it is  the  k1 visa form and  all I know  is its in  processing  no clue  how  where  it  is  in  the  process

Your plan to cross into the US after marriage in Canada will not work.  Marriage to a USC will not solve the problems that holding up your K-1 petition.

Create a timeline with specific dates if possible on what has been filed and your communications with USCIS.  That's the best way to help you.
