Mobile Passport App

Hey VJ, I wanted to share my experience with Mobile Passport App. If you don't know what this is, go to https://mobilepassport.us/ for more information. In a nutshell, it is an app that eliminates the need to fill the CBP forms or the APC kiosk after arriving to United States. It is functional at most major international airports, except LAX (not sure why it doesn't work there). Check the website for the full list. You need to add passports for each passenger you are traveling with from your family to the app. they have a passport scanner option and works fine. then you need to take a picture of the person and done with the pre-work.

Once you land, you create a trip for your customs declaration. Select the passengers who you are traveling with, pick the airport you are arriving at, the airline you are traveling with, then answer the yes/no customs questions and submit. This whole thing does not take more than a minute, I did this while we were taxiing on the runway. Within a minute, they sent receipts with barcodes for each passenger. After getting off the plane, follow signs for Mobile Passport.

What this helps with the you zip through the APC kiosks while others are struggling scanning their passports and taking selfies with the machine. We were not the first ones to get off the plane yesterday, waited another 3-4 minutes for the baby stroller to come out, but by the time we got the cbp officer, we were ahead of a lot of people. Once we got to the baggage carousel maybe there were 5 or 6 people waiting. Boston is not a crowded international airport but I think it would be more valuable at airports like JFK, ORD, ATL, MIA where the customs lines could be hectic. Probably in a few months more people would start to use the app, it may not speed up the process but eliminating the APC kiosk is a good thing especially when traveling with kids.

Right now they only let US citizens and some visa types for Canadian citizens use the app. LPRs are not able use it, no word on the website on future eligibility either.

Here is the downside, you load your passport information to an app, I guess there will always be security risks. The other downside is once you get to the CBP desk you scan the barcodes for each passenger one after the other (which takes like 15-20 seconds per passenger), and then once more scan each barcode at the customs declaration desk before leaving the terminal, which wasn't a big deal. But if there were a lot of people using this app, the line could haven take longer. I think I only saw another couple that walked with the barcodes ahead of us.
