But if Obama had fired him, the optics would be that Obama did so out of spite, which is precisely what is happening now. He was in charge of investigating Trump, therefore he gets fired. This is out of Putin's book.

Susan Collins explains the situation and talks about how Trump dismissing the FBI Director alone is nothing like Nixon dismissing all of the FBI. 

 

 

She also points out that his firing won't stop ongoing investigations in the FBI and Senate.

Which is why Trump is likely combing the Nation for a replacement that is an expert in decorative collage to replace Comey. The job announcement will specify no criminal justice experience necessary or desired.
