Hello All!

My question is: how closely related to someone does a B2 applicant need to be to include them on their DS-160 application. For example: A student of mine has a distant relative in the US. The relative is the the grandson of the sister of his grandmother.

Maybe that's confusing. His grandmother had a sister (both have since passed), and his grandmother's sister now has a grandson. The grandson is now living in the USA as a citizen. They're not close and they don't talk often. Does this person need to be included on the DS-160?

Another question, another student. This student has a mother who's been remarried. The husband (step-father of the applicant) has an uncle living in the USA. Does this person also need to be mentioned on the DS-160?

All these distant relationships are making my head spin (lol)! Sometimes I think half of Vietnam has one form of distant relative in the USA. For me, I've got no idea who my grandmother's siblings had children with, or where they are, so I'd answer 'No', even though, I'm sure they're out there in the world somewhere.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure why you are getting involved but it asks for immediate relatives.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

The reason why I'm involved is because we're taking a school trip to the USA for 11 days. I have fourteen students applying for B2 tourist visas, none of which has ever traveled abroad. I'm helping them fill out their DS-160s.

It asks for immediate relatives, but immediately after that it asks for other relatives.

If you're boiling (sorry for the terrible pun, I can't help myself) for more info, read some of my previous posts: here, here and here.

...

Because immediately after it asks for immediate relatives it asks for 'other' relatives!

I suppose the confusion is... do I need to include relatives through marriage? How about very distant relatives who wouldn't be able to support the B2 applicant for immigration purposes?

Erm, just look at the picture you posted..it even tells you on the right what an immediate relative is...

The other relatives..distant or whatever you put in the 'other'.

Its so basic... you sure you are a teacher and not a student....?

So, you're saying this includes relatives three generations removed and relatives through marriage, not by blood?

It's clearly not that basic, since they put a description for 'immediate' and not 'other'. Not to mention that contacting some of these relatives to get their details for the embassy (status, date of birth, place of birth, etc.) for these students is not an easy task, nor done quickly.

I guess we'll just  include everyone then(to be on the safe side), but it seems to me your answer is a supposition, not one based on fact.

You are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Answer "yes" and be done.  At the interview, the student can explain.

Isn't the DS-160 going to ask for the relatives info just like for immediate relatives. parents, spouses, and ex-spouses?
