Guys and girls....I know that my wife needs to take her expired green card and the original letter of extension

1 issue I am worried about is ....does China Southern airlines know how to process this (they are now a Delta partner for he Delta miles ticket..that's a downgrade!)

This flight connects in Guanzghou AIrport in CHina

But here is the bigger issue

When we married....my wife wanted to move her last name to become her middle name....apparently that is how it is done in the Php

NY state law (and maybe USA law) would not allow it

So...using a fictitious name here, she came to the USA as:

Betty Jane Smith

We married and she became

Betty Jane Jones---this is what her GREEN CARD says

Now here is the twist,,,,,,her Php passport WAS Betty Jane Smith....but we had to renew it and guess what???

The Philippine consulate in NY city said she has to do her passport according the Php rules

Now her passport says Betty Smith Jones

in other words her passport does not match her green card........!

When this came to realization....I had Delta change the name on the reservation to match her passport....that seemed like the logical thing to do

COuld she fly from NY thru china to manila JUST USING THE PHP passport only??

In that case, she would be ok

Otherwise this is darn confusing

Please help---she leaves in 5 days

Yes, it is fine. Alot of people do this all the time going to the Philippines and back, my asawa was one of them. It is very common in the Philippines to do the name change like that to change the last name to be the middle name. But are you saying she left her middle name the same and just changed the last name, but then the Philippine consulate changed it to Betty Smith Jones? As far as I know that's how it is in the Philippines and my asawa did that as well, she did not keep her middle name at all.

But we traveled back to the Philippines on her maiden name passport, all the while have her expired green card and her extension letter and a copy of the marriage certificate as well. My wife did not have any problem coming back at all by herself(she stayed for 1 month while I did 2 weeks).

Hello!

For international travel, the ticket has to match the passport. She won't have an issue in any country.

She should have a copy of the marriage certificate with her upon arrival to the US to prove her name change.

Good luck! :)

I think you got hoodwinked from the NY government.  This a first that I heard that you do not have the freedom from state to cha n get your name as you see fit. My US wife took her last name as a middle when we married. My Filipino wife did the same. I would enquire again with NY state as I think they were wrong.

Travel with your marriage certificate and always use the name on the passport to avoid problems.

If anything changes return here and update.

i am filipino and i think i can explain this a little bit more. It is very common for filipinos to have more than one first name.  in your example, you did not supply your wife's middle name but she will definitely have a maiden middle name (and it is not Jane). so we have:

First name / Given names: Betty Jane

Middle name: <unkown>

Last name: Smith

Changing a middle name in the Philippines does not affect any and all first names. Upon marriage to you, Smith becomes her middle name. Her <unknown> maiden middle name is dropped. Jane as her second first name stays. She now becomes:

First name / Given names: Betty Jane

Middle name: Smith

Last name: Jones

So it is correct that her Philippine passport should say "Betty Jane Smith Jones" there. IF her passport just says Betty Smith Jones, then there was a mistake somewhere in her passport renewal application form with Jane being dropped. If this is the case, then she needs her passport corrected.

Her green card saying Betty Jane Jones is fine. The flight ticket saying Betty Jane Jones is also fine. If I read this name, I will know that the middle name Smith is just omitted but it is there. I have bought tickets in the past which does not show my middle name.

She can fly from NYC to Manila using her Philippine passport just fine. She only needs to present her green card upon re-entry to the US and this is where the mismatched green card and passport *may* become an issue.

Just make sure the ticket matches the passport.  then carry a copy of your marriage certificate.

The traditional name format for the Philippines is hard to escape.

Visa chase and citizenship.. DONE!
