A Florida mother filmed the arrest of her 10-year-old son as school resource deputies handcuffed him and took him away.

The boy, who has autism, is accused of battery of a school employee in Okeechobee County because he kicked a teacher last November. The offense is a third-degree felony.

His mother Luanne Haygood said her son shouldn’t have been arrested for the incident.

“It was because of his autism that spurred this incident,” Haygood told WPTV. “And he was arrested for that.”

In the video, which Haygood recorded on her cell phone, her son John Benji Haygood is heard as officers place handcuffs on his wrists.

“I don’t want to be touched. Please don’t touch me,” the boy says in the video. “I don’t know what’s going on.”

Not wanting to be touched can be a symptom of autism, according to Autism Speaks.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

“Unfortunately, instead of treating or accommodating we arrest because we don’t know what else to do,” Haygood said.

you should probably figure it out haygood.

are school officials aware that even slight exposure to the juvenile 'justice' system can set a kid on track to become a permanent fixture in the system? so enraging.

I think kids have it rougher these days. In the good old days, the Principal would light your fanny on fire, call your parents who would do it again. If we got into no good.  uptown the po po would call our parents.

I remember one time we painted speed tap on the welcome to town signs and painted "the chief is a pig" on a companies sign. They made us pick up trash for several Saturdays, wash the police cars etc. The police would bring us sodas and befriend us while we were picking up trash. It taught us a lesson. we respected the police after that. I am sure now days I would have a record.

doing something stupid like that nowadays can alter your entire life. i mean, that sort of sounds like a headline for something we'd post here 'kid spray paints "the chief is a pig" on sign - cop thinks spray can is a gun - blows kid's brains out'

I've always had severe ADHD all my life. When I was a kid I was booted from the GATE program because of it. Likewise, my 6th grade teacher had no understanding of how to deal with those who have these problems. Her solution? Separate me from class, placing me in the back all alone and surrounded by cardboard 6 feet high so I couldn't even see anyone else.

Given my daughter has ADHD like I do it's a huge sign of progress how much care teachers take to understand the quirks of this issue and work with parents to deal with it in a reasonable way.

(they say ADHD is part of the autism spectrum which is why the comparison)

The incident when he kicked the teacher was last October, they went to get him tested at the school where he was arrested..... 6 months later.
Twilight zone stuff. Absolutely outrageous to arrest a 10 year old child and put him in cuffs and throw him in jail.
Oh America ! I just don't get it.
