We used pure assets for our i-864. Any bank accounts, stock portfolio etc must have been in your possession for at least one year and you must show proof of this.

You can use assets in either or both your names. The assets can be US or foreign based.

HI Mallfri76.

I will also be using pure assets (in our case, just bank accounts here in France and in the US) as I'm American living in France with my husband. We simply don't want to ask anyone to be a joint-sponsor. (although in our USCIS file we did mention in my cover letter that my younger brother agreed to be my joint sponsor.. (i've had a change of heart as he just didn't seem too keen on the idea) I see that your NVC process was long, was curious if this was due to not having a joint-sponsor? Finally, both my mother and I are listed on the same US bank accounts. Do you think this will be a problem? When I called NVC, they simply said something like "your name needs to be on the bank statements for 12 months in order to qualify".

Any advice you could give to help prevent us from getting a checklist would be greatly appreciated.. Our file just got sent to the NVC on April 5th after 7 months with the USCIS.. So i'm really nervous and want to avoid a 8 month processing time with the NVC..

Thank you.

No the requirement for the assets all came from the US Embassy. We were stuck at NVC because they lost our file. :(

Usually, if you use assets, NVC will send you a checklist telling you that you may need a joint sponsor but that the final decision will be made by the CO at the interview, so it won't keep you at NVC.

The joint account with your mother may be an issue. The assets are suppose to be able to be used as financial support for the immigrant as needed. With a joint account, your mother also have full access to that money, so it doesn't just belong to you. At the very least, I would expect that she needs to do an I-864a.

Hi Mallfri76.

Just giving you a little thanks again. :) You were the first person to help me on this forum. Your quick response and helpful info inspired me to become very active on the forum.

An update on our status. We ended up not filing with a joint-sponsor, took that risk but were approved by the NVC in less than 8 weeks (55 days). Did receive the standard checklist as you mentioned. So in the end, will be taking your advice bringing a joint-sponsor AOS form to the interview (Aug 2) as I don't want to risk a delay at the embassy. :)

Inspired by your checklists and so many others, I created the following forum.

Also created this  NVC Case Status Spread Sheet - 2017  to track the NVC process as people were getting CC's randomly. :) Works like others on here where they complete a google form.  NVC Case Status Questionnaire -  2017 ..

Discovered that we can estimate the NVC processing time based on the country we come from. I think this is due to the fact that not everyone at the NVC is trained in every language/country. So for example. India is 8-9 weeks.. UK 7-8 weeks. Jamaica 9 weeks. Mexico and Philippines 9-10 weeks. etc.. And discovered the CR1/IR1 visas get their interview dates faster than E/EB visas. Other than that, "under review" or made it in the review dept doesn't mean anything as some people get processed in 1 day whereas other 14-30 days..

Anyway, point of my message was to thank you. Your commitment to the forum even after having already moved to the states helped me and I'm sure many others.
