N-600 or Renew Green Card

My parents were both naturalized before I turned 18. My green card has expired and I have not renewed it. I was just wondering if I could apply for the N-600 Certificate of Citizenship conferred from my parents naturalization with an expired green card? Or should I renew the green card first? Trying to save the fee of having to renew my green card if I can just get my Certificate of Citizenship. Has anyone had any problems applying for N-600 with an expired green card?

If your parents naturalized before you turned 18 and you were living with them in the USA at that time, you automatically became a USC and can get a passport.

Like NikLR, mentioned you can just get the passport as proof of citizenship.

I didn't know I could just get my passport. I thought I had to have a Certificate in order to get the passport. Thank you.

No as you got it through your parents you need one of their certificate plus your GC to show you were in the US at the time.

I went to the website to apply for a Passport and the requirements are below for my situation:

 

U.S. Citizenship through Naturalization of a Parent

If you were born outside the United States and acquired U.S. citizenship through the naturalization of your parent(s), please submit the following with your passport application:

• Your foreign birth certificate listing your parent(s)
• Your parent(s)’ naturalization certificate
• Evidence of your permanent residence status. Examples include:
  • Permanent Resident Card/Green Card --> But I'm concerned I could get denied if my GC has expired.
  • Foreign passport with the original I-551 visa entry stamp
• Your parents' marriage certificate (if your parents were married when you legally entered the U.S. and before your 18th birthday) 
• Documentation of legal custody (if your parents were not married when you legally entered the U.S.)
• Evidence of your legitimation (if your parents were not married at the time of your birth). Examples include:
  • Your parents' marriage certificate dated after your birth
  • Certified court order of legitimation

It should not be an issue, as you became a USC the same day as one of your parents. The GC is to show you were here as a resident in your parents custody the day on that day one of them said their oath. 

USC don't need GC so you had no need to renew it.

Relax.  You do not have a problem.

 

You are already a USC, so you don't need a green card.  It would be a huge mistake for you to renew it since you are essentially stating that you are an LPR and not a USC.

 

File with what you have for US Passport.  (Don't bother with the expensive N-600 which you will never need when you have a US passport.)

 

If you face a problem, explain that your green card was valid when your parents naturalized and on that day you automatically became a USC when you met the requirements of the Child Citizenship Act.
