With all the immigration stuff happening now that Trump is a president, I want to file for n-400 asap before they change something else. I am married to a us citizen and had all my kids here in us . I don't have a criminal record, but that still concerns me that the things are changing for immigrants.

Anyways, i need to provide a proof that my husband is a us citizen. He doesn't have a birth certificate because it was lost(his mom can't remember where it is ugh). His passport is expired since 2013. I know we were not planning to go anywhere outside of us for a while so didn't have a need to renew.

My question is can I still use the copy of his expired passport as a proof ? I can't wait for another month to file, because you will never know what crazy stuff they're coming up with again.

Okay no reason to panic.

Have you been a GC holder for 5 years? Would be a lot easier for you to file as that instead of marriage.

Yes I have been a gc holder for over 7 years. I will be calling uscis to ask.

Then no worries. Apply on your own based on you being a GC holder for more then 5 years. It will be easier since you don't have to give so much evidence.

You can just look at their webpage: https://www.uscis.gov/n-400

There are the form and instructions.

Good luck.

Thank you for an idea. I really appreciate it. I talked to uscis customer line and have been told that I could apply as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years option. Also will be talking to a local office to confirm. I will post an update about what they said.

I mean this in the nicest way, take a breath and relax. ? First off, Trump is going after illegal immigrants, not permanent residents. Second, as we've already seen, Trump cannot do whatever pops into his head, we have both the judiciary and legislative branch providing checks and balances.

No need to confirm what the local USCIS office says, we already know you can apply under the five year rule. ? There are two ways to apply for citizenship; either after three years if you've been married to the same USC and with continuous US residency or after five years with continuous US residency. Since you've been a permanent resident for more than five years, you can apply for citizenship using that option.

Good luck with your citizenship journey.
