RFIE for complete federal income tax return

Hi y'all,

We were noticed last week that a request for initial evidence was on our way. The famous pink letter came in the mail today and it says the following:

"The petitioner/sponser on Form I-864. Affidavit of Support, must submit a complete Federal income tax return submitted to the IRS for the most recent tax year."

However, in the original package that we send off for my AOS we did include all of his 2015 (2014 & 2013 too) W2's - which is the only thing he has in the safe.
I tried searching through the custom search here on VJ but the answers varied so much that I was doubting what the correct answer to my RFE will be. So the W2 is not his tax return or it is?
Most likely the answer is calling the IRS and ask for a transcript (1040?) for 2015 or were the W2's valid but they most likely lost them while processing our petition and we have to resend them?

Many thanks for the clear answers and help to send this RFE back asap and correct!

a w2 is not a tax return , a w2 is a tax document a employer has to report

That's all on the letter, as stated.

"The petitioner/sponser on Form I-864. Affidavit of Support, must submit a complete Federal income tax return submitted to the IRS for the most recent tax year."

We printed out the IRS Tax Return online with reason 'Immigration' so we did not have to pay for it or anything.

Return Transcript

Tax Return Transcripts show most line items from your tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules. This transcript does not reflect any changes you, your representative or the IRS made after you filed your return. In many cases, a Return Transcript will meet the requirements of lending institutions offering mortgages and student loans

According to my in-laws, who does taxes, we printed out the actual tax return for 2015. Everything is noted on it. Request date, response date. His name, ssn, filling status, his income - wages, salaries, tips etc. Adjustements to income. Tax and credits, other taxes, payments - federal income tax withheld, refund or amount owed, third party designee. I'm pretty sure this is not a receipt.

Thank you! I've been searching through VJ's website more and found some helpful topics all the way in the back that confirmed multiple times that transcripts are well accepted when they ask for these kind of evidences. Good luck to you too! Thanks for replying!
