absolutely insane. the killer gets to go home? sanctity of life my hiney.

McKnight, 28, was shot about 3 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 1) at the intersection of Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard in Terrytown. A witness, who declined to give her name, said she saw a man at the intersection yelling at McKnight, who was trying to apologize. The man shot McKnight more than once, the witness said. She said he shot McKnight, stood over him and said, "I told you don't you f--- with me." Then the man fired again, she said.

Authorities named the shooter as Ronald Gasser, 54, and said he stayed at the scene and turned his gun in to officers. Gasser was in custody and was being questioned, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said. The sheriff said McKnight did not have a gun, and deputies did not find a gun outside McKnight's vehicle.

The gun is okay, and the Second Amendment too, aren't they the only important things here?

Total sarcasm of course.

I wonder what possible excuse the police had for letting him go?

i don't understand it myself, the press conference itself was pretty odd imo. i guess because the man turned over his gun and waited for the cops to show up, he didn't actually take a life? or uh..he didn't take off afterwards so clearly he did nothing wrong? and something about this can't have anything to do with race because mcknight had a family member in this particular police department at one time? dunno. the only thing i know is a man is dead and can't go home to his son, but his killer is out and about per police 'tis okay.

So what other amendments would you be in favor of disregarding . How about the pesky 4th that I love so much. Maybe we did not envision mass and social media, so we could gut the 1st. The courts are backed up lets gut the 6th

did you not see where he said 'total sarcasm'? no one is talking about disregarding the second. but why is a man who confessed to killing an unarmed man allowed to go free?

it was a question, i don't understand it myself.

It appears the bystander was lying. The football player was the aggressive party. The shell cases were inside the car. He was not standing over him. I really had no idea who these people are, until you said something. Obviously the police at this time think it was self defense

I don't favor scrapping the Second Amendment as I have stated until my fingers bleed on my keyboard. I just don't think it is so sacred that it Trumps all the others. Oddly enough those people that do hold it as sacred and most high of the Amendments seem to have little problem sacrificing the others and the Constitution itself in the name of protection from Muslims.

There will be no sympathy for the deceased victim from these same people because doing so might somehow besmirch the sacred right to keep and bear arms. Pathetic really.

And this might be a reason for letting the shooter free. He was getting yelled at by the deceased or actually assaulted physically?

So I understand that the case is yet young, and more details will come out... But if the guy ADMITTED to shooting McKnight, why let him go, even if "overnight"? Gotta be something more going on here.

Different words, but same outcome: http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/18182683/joe-mcknight-former-usc-trojans-new-york-jets-rb-killed-louisiana

But from here:

"Sheriff Normand disputed several rumors that had spread on social media, including that Mr. Gasser had stood over Mr. McKnight as he fired the gun, that a video has been recovered and that a witness had said Mr. McKnight apologized to Mr. Gasser before the shooting.

All of those are false, he said, and he advised people to believe only what they heard from officials like himself and the district attorney. I strongly suggest you stop believing what youre reading, he said.

Councilman Mark Spears, who also spoke at the news conference, said: It shouldnt be a rush to judgment. The facts are still coming out, and we should base it on facts, not on Facebook and other social media. He also said officials were praying for the McKnight family.

In a statement released before the news conference, the sheriffs office said that Mr. Gasser had handed over a semiautomatic handgun to officers at the scene. The sheriff said at the news conference that Mr. Gasser had fired three rounds from inside his vehicle."

You really need to step away from your keyboard for a while if you really believe this nonsense. The deceased victim is just as dead, no matter how it went down, and I suspect no matter who the culprit is, it will be a tragic loss of life. The right to bear arms has nothing to do with this sad loss of life. It's a crime, and hopefully will be dealt with properly. In the meantime, regardless of the reason for the altercation, this guy's family will suffer, and that is really horrible.

I actually don't know the answer to this questions - Do police typically let people go home the same day after shooting and killing someone in "presumed self defense"? Is that normal procedure? Even if they suspect self defense, if he admitted to having "done the deed" so to speak (in self defense or otherwise) wouldn't they keep him? They would have to have some very very credible evidence that he is not a danger to others, and in so short a time I'm wondering if they really feel that confident?

At the risk of being inflammatory, I do wonder whether people think the same thing would have happened if roles were reversed. If it was an aggressive white man who was shot and killed by a black man in a car, who then waited and handed over his gun to the cops. Would he have been sent home?

I just can't remember the last time I saw a report of someone killing someone else and being sent home the same day. But like I said, I don't really know the legal issues. I know we are "innocent until proven guilty" but if they guy waited with his gun and handed it over, they could pretty quickly match the gun to the victim's gunshots and that would at least prove he did it. Investigating whether it was self defense or not would take more time.

Everyone involved is likely suffering including the shooter. But these threads are a dime a dozen because shootings are all too common.

The inevitable outcome will be the 2nd Amendment crowd rallying to 'prove' the victim was the shooter. We see that here in roughly the fourth or fifth post.

I don't know the facts of this case, and my comments were more or less sarcastic anticipation of the regurgitated nonsense which is clearly developing.

It must be racist. Got to be. ??
