Hi guys, my boyfriend and I am planning to get engaged and apply for a K-1 Visa to get married, we were wondering if it matters what kind of ring you get engaged with? I'm an unconventional girl and the diamond ring thing isn't really something I'm too fond of, but not sure if it would count against us. Also are there any other rules regarding the engagement we have to take into account. We want to do this right from the start as at this point they won't even let me visit him, because they are scared we'll get married and I'll stay there. Any help or links to previous topics on this would be greatly valued.

Diamond ring, plastic ring, candy ring, no ring at all - it doesn't matter! As long as you bot sign a letter of intent to get married, you are engaged enough for the USCIS. Also make sure you do not get married in any way before entering on the K1 visa.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Having a ring really has no bearing on your application. If you do have a ring and a receipt for one though, it can't hurt to include a photocopy of it in the application. As always the important stuff is: do you have evidence of meeting in person within two years of filing, and are you free and willing to marry by including signed statements to that effect. There is no standard for engagement.

It doesn't matter. You should decide where you will interview before you send the application though. You can interview in a country where you are a legal resident or a citizen.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

I have to return to South Africa in June next year and I'm almost sure we'd only be like half way through the application by then, if even that far.

The visa will be for entry to the US - it doesn't matter where you end up leaving from.

If you send the application now (soonish) - you're very likely to be able to interview well before June of next year.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.
