CR-1 Visa Extension

My wife has her interview scheduled at the US embassy in Sydney in less than a month, but the problem is due to her employment contract there she is obligated to work at her current firm til the April of next year. Even though we were planning on her coming here over Xmas break, some of my coworker told me that some consulates allow an extension to the CR-1 Visa (beyond the 6months of visa allowance).

Since the folks on VJ are very knowledgeable about this type of things I wanted to check here first to see if anyone has any experience with this or this is some sort of myth. If it's truly possible, what's the typical way to go about it?

Possibly.It's up to the embassy.Usually needs to be a good reason.Why not request a later date.The embassy can always do that move it to December or January.

Why not get the visa now, she comes and enters on it in December, gets the visa endorsed, it serves as proof of LPR status for a year.

She can go back in January, work and re-enter the US once her contract is up.

After hearing both the good and bad sides of interview reschedule we're leaning against it. Initial plan was to have her come here, stay for a week, and then go back. But after hearing about the visa extension and given how much she has traveled this year (wedding, honeymoon, vacation, and work) we just wanted to explore the viability of this alternative option.
