OK I think some people miss understood you. If you are doing adjustment of status within the US you don't have to have an unexpired passport. So you can take the expired one as a form of identity. You won't get no visa stamped in your passport when you get approved. All you get is a sheet that says congratulations you are recommended for approval, than you receive your green card. I would take your expired passport just in case if you have the physical I94 so they take it off.

Now if you had your interview in an embassy than yes a new passport is necessary. However in your case no.
