Traveling to US after visa approval

Hey everyone, I haven't even filed the 130 yet, but I'm looking way ahead to the day where we're approved. My husband doesn't have a French passport, as he's only ever traveled within the EU. When we're approved, does he need a French passport for international travel or...does the visa serve as like ... a travel device? I have my US passport and for me, it's magic, and I use it for everything. Should we just get him his French passport so that he has it anyway?

Since the visa will be on a page of the passport, he must have a passport to obtain the visa.

Adjusted status from VWP

Met in London October 2011

Married 10/9/15

AOS submitted 10/26/15

RFE (2014 tax transcript) received 11/21/15

EAD/AP received 1/25/16

Interview & approval 4/22/16

 

ROC submitted 3/6/18

NOA received 3/13/18

Biometrics 5/4/18

18 month extension received 8/13/18

 

N-400 submitted 1/22/19!

Yes he will need a passport, both to travel and to put the visa in.

If he CANNOT get a passport (in some rare cases like being a refugee), travel documents can be arranged but that is a complicated matter.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

He will need a passport before the interview. Once your petition is approved at USCIS then its sent to NV for more processing. He will need passport then, so you can complete the DS-260. I would get it within the next 5 months once you file.
